Last Monday a son was born to Maeve Townsend and David McKean. His name is Gideon Joseph Kennedy McKean and he’s a healthy boy of seven pounds, 12 ounces and 21 inches. Gideon is the first grandchild of former Maryland Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend (59) and her husband David (62) and the first great-grandchild of Ethel Kennedy (83) and the late senator Robert F. Kennedy. Gideon is also the first of the fifth generation of Kennedys.
Maeve Townsend is a senior advisor for global affairs at the Department of Health and Human Services and David is the legal director for Servicemembers Legal Defense Network. The proud parents took their firstborn’s name from the Supreme Court’s Gideon V. Wainwright ruling ordering states to pay for public defenders. “We hope he will be inspired to follow his family’s long tradition,” McKean said in a statement, “of being outraged against injustice.”
